What is an IOP?

IOP stands for intensive outpatient program. Intensive means that these programs include more weekly therapy than typically offered with individual counseling. Outpatient means that services are provided outside of a hospital or treatment facility.

What is the difference between IOP, PHP, and residential or inpatient treatment?

Online intensive outpatient programs offer the same services as in-person intensive outpatient programs. The main difference is that online intensive outpatient programs conduct counseling sessions via HIPAA secure videoconferencing while typical IOP programs require you to travel to an on-site location for counseling sessions. Online IOPs also offer individuals digital resources – including CBT lessons and mindfulness exercises.

What services are part of an IOP?

Online Intensive outpatient programs include 3 weekly group therapy sessions which are 3 hours in length. Online IOP programs also include 1 weekly individual counseling session. During your initial individual counseling session, you will usually take an assessment to determine what mental health and substance use issues you may be dealing with. Next you will work with your individual counselor on developing a recovery plan which will help guide your treatment over the next few months. This may include providing you with additional resources if needed such as primary care for ongoing medical issues or psychiatry for medication assisted treatment. Your individual counselor during the program will help you learn new ways to cope with drug cravings and anxiety. 90Health counselors are skilled in dozens of forms of therapy including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness and acceptance therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy. Your counselor will work with you to figure out what forms of therapy help the most. During group sessions you may talk about struggles you are having in early sobriety and get support from your group members.

How many people are typically in an IOP group?

Typically IOP groups will be between 6 to 10 people.
